How Do You Measure a Year?

The year isn’t over yet, but I’m starting to feel that familiar end-of-year tug to reflect:

  • Have I done “enough?”

  • Did I use my time in ways that mattered?

  • What do I truly want to be doing with my time?

  • Is there anything I’d like to do differently in the weeks and months to come?

Lyrics from the musical Rent play in my head:

525,600 minutes, 525,000 moments so dear
525,600 minutes – how do you measure, measure a year?
In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee.
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife.
In 525,600 minutes – how do you measure a year in the life?
How about love?

There’s so much packed into those lines. They remind me that we create our own definition of success.  We choose how to define it.  We choose what it means to lead a good life, and our definitions can be different from those around us.  It’s often a combination of bigger goals and everyday things – the sunsets, the cups of coffee, the shared laughter – that come together to create a life well lived.

So let me ask you:

  • How are you currently defining success for yourself?

  • What makes a day, a week, or a year great?

  • How might you want to redefine success moving forward?

As we edge closer to the end of the year, I encourage you to reflect—not with judgment but with curiosity. What feels meaningful to you in this season of your life?

And if you’re not sure how to define success right now, that’s okay—start with what you do know, experiment, and let your understanding grow as you go.

With warmth,

Amy
