Surround Yourself with People Who Share Your Mission

One of my favorite memes is a photograph of a pride of lions with the words, “Surround yourself with those on the same mission as you.”  A lone lion is impressively beautiful and powerful, but a group of lions all with the same goal reaches a whole new level of effectiveness.

Jim Rohn famously said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”   When I think back on the times I have created deep transformation in my life, I notice a common thread: I had the benefit of positive influences.

To create meaningful change in your life, seek out individuals who have already achieved what you aspire to, who know more than you do, who are on the same journey as you, and who believe that what you want to achieve is absolutely possible.

Being a part of a like-minded community offers numerous benefits:

  • Mission Reinforcement: Surrounding yourself with people who share your goals keeps you connected to your own hopes and ambitions, reigniting your energy and inspiration when things get in the way.

  • Increased Confidence: Seeing relatable people accomplish what you aim to achieve boosts your belief in your own potential, making it easier to stay committed to your goals. Plus, the right community believes in you even when you doubt yourself.

  • Shared Knowledge: Your community understands your challenges and can provide valuable insights, brainstorming, and strategies based on their own experiences.

  • Accountability: A supportive group can mirror your efforts, holding you accountable and helping you stay on track when you start to veer off course.

  • Support and Celebration: The right circle will cheer you on during tough times, offer help when you're low or lost, and celebrate your victories.

  • Opportunities to Mentor: Being part of a community allows you to share your experiences and wisdom, contributing to the growth and success of others.

Action Steps.

  1. Identify Your Values and Goals:  Be clear about your mission, values, and long-term objectives.  Journal, look up values-exercises online, or consider working with a certified coach.  This clarity will help you recognize people who align with your vision and where to start seeking out connections.

  2. Seek Out Communities and Networks: Join groups, attend events, and participate in forums related to your goals.  Look for communities where you can meet individuals who share your passion and drive.  How can you further expose yourself to people who already successfully do what you want to do?

  3. Nurture Relationships:  Building meaningful connections takes time and effort.  Invest in relationships by offering support, sharing your journey, and being genuinely interested in others’ progress.

  4. Stay Open to New Connections:  Be open to meeting new people and expanding your network.  Sometimes, the most meaningful connections come from unexpected places.
